Synopsis

SCO157 Empathy and Reflection discusses the nature of empathy and explores whether and how empathy can help us better understand individuals and communities. It will explore how the arts cultivate empathy, and reflect upon the relationship between empathy and morality. It will also question the relationship between empathy and personal reflection, such as, how we can learn to distinguish our feelings from others’, and how we are able to take another’s perspective while regulating our own emotional responses. Students will compose their own creative project (e.g., short film, podcast, music video) to elicit empathy for a cause they are interested in or elicit empathy with their learning moments (for example, service-learning, overseas experience or work attachment).
