Synopsis

EAS411 Aerospace Vehicles Design introduce knowledge and skills to develop a conceptual and preliminary design of a fixed wing manned or unmanned air vehicle based on design requirements. Fundamental knowledge learnt in EAS301 Aerospace Dynamics and EAS309 Flight Dynamics and Control forms the guiding principles and theoretical background of this course. The first part of the topics is structured to approximate the sequence for design layout. The second part of the topics concerns design analysis including aerodynamics, flight performance, stability and control, and cost estimate. Typical design practice, considerations and proven rules of thumb in air vehicle design are introduced and trained through a design project. Applications of open source software and implementations of numerical calculation are integrated into the hands-on design training.

Level: 4
Credit Units: 5
Presentation Pattern: Every July

Topics

  • Overview of a typical air vehicle design process
  • Quick initial sizing from a conceptual design
  • Preliminary design of airfoil, wing and tail configuration
  • Selection of thrust-to-weight ratio and wing loading
  • Preliminary sizing of fuselage, tail and control surfaces
  • Configuration layout design
  • Propulsion, fuel system and landing gear integration
  • Quick aerodynamic analysis using potential method
  • Flight performance evaluation of a preliminary design
  • Stability and control analysis of a preliminary design
  • Considerations of materials, structures and weight
  • Preliminary cost analysis

Learning Outcome

  • Propose conceptual design and preliminary design of an air vehicle to meet a given set of requirements
  • Set up major components of an air vehicle design
  • Formulate aerodynamic database of an air vehicle design through potential flow analyses and simulations
  • Appraise flight performance, stability and control of a preliminary design
  • Recommend cost estimate of a design through empirical or statistical evaluation
  • Construct trade-off investigation for an air vehicle design
  • Create a digital model of an air vehicle design using open source software for air vehicle configuration layout and definition of key design parameters
  • Experiment an air vehicle design through design improvement and iterations
