International Social Welfare

Synopsis

International Social Welfare develops a framework for the analysis of social welfare and social work in different countries with an emphasis on comparative social policy. Students will be exposed to social development, social policy, social services, and social work issues in different countries and how these are influenced by the social, economic, and political and cultural contexts. Cross national social work and work of international NGOs and other world bodies will also be discussed. Skills in international networking, collaboration and organisation will be included in the case scenarios and exercises.

Learning Outcome

Analyze the structure of human services in different countries, including the roles of government and non-governmental organisations.
Discuss the changes occurring in the economy, social structure, and politics and the impact of these changes on the provision of human services.
Appraise governmental and non- governmental social policies that impact the vulnerable groups.
Assess the ways services are delivered in the different setting to specific target populations such as children, serious and persistently mentally ill, older adults, etc.
Evaluate the global development and function of professional social work and community development.
Test concepts and methodologies for the comparative cross-societal study the concepts of social development, social policy, social services, and social work.
