Military Studies Minor


Overview

As part of the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) continuing education initiative, non-graduate SAF personnel can pursue a part-time undergraduate education at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) to upgrade their academic qualification and skills. Uniformed SAF personnel can select from a wide range of part-time undergraduate degree programmes offered by SUSS with or without the minor in Military Studies.

Under the SUSS-SAF collaboration, the minor in Military Studies comprises of approved courses from the Public Safety and Security (PSS) programme offered by SUSS, the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) accredited Undergraduate Professional Military Education and Training (UGPMET) courses for SAF junior Officers, and the NTU-accredited Continuing Education Master's courses conducted during the Command and Staff Course (CSC)/Command and Staff Course (Executive) [CSC(E)] at Goh Keng Swee Command and Staff College (GKS CSC).

Credit Recognition

The total credit recognition allowed for the minor in Military Studies is capped at 30 credit units (cu). The completed accredited courses from UGPMET and CSC/CSC(E) may be recognised towards the undergraduate programmes pursued. Please note that students who wish to have their SAF courses recognised by SUSS must obtain verification from SAF that they have satisfactorily completed and passed all the assessments and assignments of the above courses.

Programme Structure

Students are required to complete a total of 130 credit units (cu) of courses, inclusive of 10 cu of SUSS Core courses to graduate with a basic degree.

For major programmes with an honours option, students who achieve a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.5 and above upon completion of their basic degree will be invited to enrol in the honours programme, which will be offered only if the requisite number of students is met. Students who accept the invitation will need to complete another 40 cu of courses to achieve 170 cu in total and have to satisfy all university requirements in order to graduate with an honours degree.

All courses are 5 cu unless stated otherwise.

  • Policing, Crime and Society
  • Security Operations and Administration
  • Peacebuilding and Security
  • Public Safety and Security in Singapore^
  • Risk Management in Event Planning

Free Electives (Total 5 cu)

Explanatory Note:
*Credit recognition of up to 30 cu may be granted to those who have completed accredited courses from UGPMET or CSC/CSC(E), subject to meeting programme requirements.
^If a student has completed PSS219 Public Safety and Security as part of another Minor, student is to select an additional 5 cu from any available course.
