Programme Overview

​There is much emphasis on providing quality care and education for children as society recognises the importance of investing in their well-being and development. The Master of Early Childhood Education Programme (MECED) provides the continuing professional development for early childhood educators and the extension in career pathways for those who aspire to take on key roles that will influence the advancement of the field.

Pitched to address current issues and challenges in the early childhood sector, this programme places emphases on pedagogical approaches, quality assessment and informed practices. It aims to develop early childhood practitioners, curriculum leaders, trainers, supervisors, and those who wish to pursue research in early childhood education.​

Unique features of the programme:
  • Courses address current trends in early childhood education locally & globally​
  • Students have the option to embark on one of three specialisation tracks – Practitioner, Leadership or Research
  • Interdisciplinary courses offered as electives
  • Courses are taught by experienced, well-qualified academics and professionals in the early childhood sector
  • Classes are scheduled to suit the needs of working adults


Applicants should be Singapore citizens, permanent residents or residents in Singapore. In addition, these minimum requirements must be met:
  • An undergraduate degree or an equivalent qualification from a recognised institution*
  • Good communication skills (written and spoken English)
  • At least two (2) years of work experience**
  • 21 years and above

* Applicants should have a recognised degree in Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and the ECDA accredited Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education (DECCE-T).

** Applicants applying for the Master of Early Childhood Education programme should have at least two (2) years' experience in the Early Childhood Education sector.

Applicants must complete and submit an online application to Singapore University of Social Sciences by the specified deadline. 

Shortlisted candidates may be required to undergo one or more interviews and/or take such written admission or other evaluation tests as may be prescribed by Singapore University of Social Sciences. 

The offer of admission is dependent on the number of places available in individual programmes. 

In the event of overwhelming demand and limited vacancy, priority will be given to eligible applicants who applied early. You are encouraged to submit your application early to avoid disappointment. 

The decision of the Admissions Committee of Singapore University of Social Sciences is final and binding. Singapore University of Social Sciences reserves the right to refuse admission and is not obliged to offer an explanation for the non-admission of unsuccessful candidates.
To graduate with the Master of Early Childhood Education, students are required to complete a total of 60 credit units (CUs) and obtain a minimum CGPA of 3.0.

The MECED programme offers three specialisation tracks, – Practitioner, Leadership and Research – providing our students the optimal professional pathways within the early childhood sector. Upon successful completion of the six core courses with a minimum CGPA of 3.0, students could then embark on one of the three specialisation tracks.

Practitioners, curriculum leaders, trainers and supervisors in the Early Childhood Education field who are seeking to enhance or extend their professional pathways and upgrade sector-relevant skills should embark on the Master of Early Childhood Education (MECED) programme.
The Master of Early Childhood Education programme provides the career pathways for early childhood educators who aspire to take on critical roles that will influence the advancement of the field. Graduates of the programme will be equipped with vital knowledge and skills that will enable them to value-add the early childhood sector through advocacy, practice, training and research, serving as critical motivators and evaluators of curriculum, pedagogy and practice.

The ECDA Scholarship is offered to outstanding and deserving in-service early childhood educators who wish to pursue the MECED programme.   1. How many intake(s) are there in a year for Master of Early Childhood Education? 
    There is one intake a year; every July. 

  2. What is the duration to complete the programme?​ 
    The Master of Early Childhood Education is a minimum 2-year programme. The maximum candidature is 4 years.

  3. How many courses do students take in each semester? 
    Students are recommended to complete 3 courses per semester. 

  4. When are the lessons scheduled? 
    Lessons are scheduled on 4 Saturdays per course, from 8.30am to 5.30pm, with a lunch break of an hour.
