Overseas Summer School for Full-time Students

Due to the global pandemic, summer courses are offered via I) in-person and II) online formats

Before applying for any programme, do review the important information below.

The list of pre-approved Overseas Summer courses offered by host universities in 2022 will be progressively updated to include any new courses (if applicable).

Full-time students may only apply for courses from this list.

Please log in to InPlace > Available > click “Filter” button > select “OSS 2022” under “Opportunities For”.

In-Person Programmes

Students are allowed to travel to countries under the vaccinated travel lane (VTL) to attend Overseas Summer School (OSS).

Given the ongoing uncertainty of the pandemic situation, students should be aware of the risks (e.g. fluctuating travel restrictions), as well as the financial implications (e.g. non-refundable tuition fees and travel expenses, high cost of overseas quarantine facility). Students should also take note of each country’s mandatory PCR test fees.

In the event that in-person courses have been converted to online, students may still receive credit recognition.

Students planning to attend in-person OSS are required to attend the following briefing:
1) Pre-departure briefing by International SOS (27 May, 1pm)

Given the complexities of overseas travel, students are required to complete these steps in the following order:

Note that SUSS is not a partner university with any of the overseas summer winter universities. Hence, students are required to pay the non-partner fee.

Financial assistance
There are 3 types financial assistance available on reimbursement basis:

Students are not allowed to apply for both LEAD Grant and PSEA for the same programme.

Students may apply for OE Grant if they meet its requirements, and any excess costs that are not covered by OE Grant may be covered by LEAD Grant or PSEA.

SUSS transcript for OSS application

If a SUSS transcript is requested by the host university, kindly write to Student Support (students@suss.edu.sg) to request for a copy of the certification letter for completed grades. Note that it will be a letter document (instead of a transcript), which will be ready within 5 working days.

Leave of Absence (LOA)

If there are OSS courses that clash with your SUSS academic calendar, students are strongly advised to consult their respective schools prior to their OSS applications as the Office of Global Programmes does not endorse LOA. Kindly seek approval from your respective Head of Programme (HoP) if you need to apply for LOA.

Transcripts for credit recognition

Kindly inform the coordinator from the host university to email the electronic copy of your OSS transcript to suss_global@suss.edu.sg.  To prevent flooding of our mailboxes, students are not required to forward their OSS transcript to us individually. Upon receipt of OSS transcripts from the host university, we will process the credit recognition and your academic profile will be updated by October 2022 (i.e. before eCR period).

Post-trip

Upload your OE Insights on Portfolium (via OE pathway) within 1 month of your return.

Submit PSEA claim (if any).

Course offerings

Can I apply for OSS courses that are not mentioned in the approved list but are relevant to my major?
Students are allowed to take courses from the pre-approved list only. Not all courses offered by overseas universities will be included. Only courses with exposure to regional/global context will be offered. Any request for credit recognition approval for unlisted courses will not be accepted.

Can we take more than one OSS course?
You may apply for more than one course from the same host university. Do check your academic profile for your outstanding number of cu of Unrestricted Electives that is available.

Credit recognition

The OSS courses in the pre-approved list are approved for credit recognition to Unrestricted Electives, can the course be recognised for credit transfer to General Electives as well?
Only for Unrestricted Electives.

I have 2.5 cu Unrestricted Electives remaining (I have cleared 17.5/20 cu), is it still possible for me to take a 5 cu OSS Course?
Yes, you may take an OSS course worth 5 cu. You are required to fully complete and pass the OSS course, credit recognition of 2.5 cu will be processed.

I have 2.5 cu Unrestricted Electives remaining. The OSS course is worth 5 cu, can the remaining 2.5 cu be used to offset my General Electives which I have yet to clear?
You may take an OSS course worth 5 cu of Unrestricted Electives. You are required to fully complete and pass the course, but we will process your credit recognition of 2.5 cu Unrestricted Electives only.

I have fulfilled the 20 cu requirement for SUSS Core Unrestricted (UE), would I still be able to apply for summer school? Would there be any implications in doing so?
You may enrol in OSS courses to fulfill the Overseas Experience (OE) experiential requirement, just without credit recognition. When registering via InPlace, select the option “no credit recognition required” in Step 4.

If credit recognition is processed for additional cu of Unrestricted Elective (on top of the required 20 cu), it will affect the subsidised course fee that students are entitled to. Every student receives subsidy for 230 cu and the additional 30 cu on top of 200 cu may be required to resit/repeat courses in SUSS.

Registration on InPlace

Can I apply for multiple placements on InPlace?
You may apply for multiple placements, just note that you are required to complete Step 4 on InPlace only for the confirmed OSS course(s):
i) Submit acceptance letter from host university on InPlace.
ii) Indicate course type for credit recognition (even if credit recognition is not required).

Can I rank my placement preference on InPlace?
You are not required to rank your preference of OSS courses.

I have applied for my OSS placement in InPlace, when can I proceed to register with the host university?
Students will receive an email notification once their OSS 2022 application on InPlace has been approved by the Office of Global Programmes.
Registration with host university.

Some OSS programme fees include accommodation. Are we allowed to source for our own accommodation?
Please check with the host university if separate arrangements can be made.

Is there a GPA requirement?
Are interviews required as part of the application process?
Please check the OSS host university website for GPA requirements and/or any prerequisites. Each university has differing requirements and application processes.

Fulfilment of Overseas Experience (OE) requirement

The in-person OSS I registered for has been converted to an online format. Will my Overseas Experience (OE) requirement be considered as fulfilled?
In the event that in-person courses have been converted to online courses but their assessment does not include any group project, students will still receive credit recognition. However, their Overseas Experience (OE) requirement will be considered as not fulfilled.

I have 2.5 cu Unrestricted Electives remaining. Can I take one 2.5 cu online OSS course to fulfill the Overseas Experience (OE) requirement?
Given that online courses have relatively less opportunities for intercultural interaction with international participants as compared to in-person courses, only online courses with group projects are included in pre-approved list. Students are required to take at least one 5 cu or two 2.5 cu worth of courses.

If students take only one 2.5 cu course, it is not endorsed for Overseas Experience (OE) fulfillment.

Travel insurance

Is it compulsory to purchase SUSS Travel Insurance?
All SUSS students (both Part-time and Full-time) are covered by SUSS Student Travel Insurance. Given the comprehensive coverage by International SOS, you must make payment for the school's travel insurance policy. This is processed after we confirm your OSS 2022 participation. If you would like even higher coverage, you are free to purchase a 2nd travel insurance policy on your own.

The in-person OSS I registered for has been canceled by the host university. What will SUSS travel insurance cover?
Should you make changes to your travel plans due to this change, all travel insurance policies would not cover any trip cancellation refunds. You must ensure that you pay close attention now to the refund terms and conditions of all relevant companies and organisations (e.g. host university, airline, accommodation provider). Some host universities may only offer you a partial refund, with an option to reserve your place in their next Summer 2023 programme.

If you have any queries, please email us at ogp@suss.edu.sg.
