Synopsis

ADL561 Contemporary Approaches to Learning Assessment and Evaluation examines authentic, innovative models of alternative & performance assessment and evaluation in the context of Higher Education and at the workplace. The extent to which future-ready competencies and soft-skills can, and should, be measured will be explored, and the implications this focus can have on reforming higher education curriculum and pedagogy. At the same time, the purposes, motivations and uses of performance assessment and evaluation in workplace learning will be discussed, as well as its place in adult lifelong learning and the development of cultures of learning. Issues, challenges and prospects in designing for, and evaluating, competencies and learning in authentic contexts will also be examined.

  • Assess the use of authentic, alternative or performance assessments in different contexts.
  • Analyse the interplay of authentic assessment or evaluation, and concepts such as lifelong learning, workplace learning, educational reform, innovation, or nurturing cultures of learning.
  • Evaluate the purpose(s), prospects or challenges of assessing 21st century or future-ready competencies and relevant soft-skills in educational or workplace settings.
  • Propose a performance assessment task aligned to identified learning outcomes from an authentic context.
  • Design scoring rubrics as part of an authentic assessment in educational or workplace settings.
  • Appraise the use of authentic assessment or evaluation strategies in building learning communities or encouraging lifelong learning.
