BAE209 Art through the Ages: A Global History aims to provide a foundation in the knowledge and skills of art history from a global perspective. It will provide an introduction to the history of ancient art to contemporary art, moving from examining the rise of Impressionism in modern 19th century Paris, to looking at the impact of globalization on art practice in the 21st century. It will introduce the fundamentals of art historical practice and scholarly research. Emphasis is placed on the changing definition of art, works of art as material objects, and the roles played by artists, patrons, viewers, and consumers in making meaning about art. The course aims to develop fundamental visual literacy skills that equip students with life-transforming tools for engaging with a diverse of range of images and objects for pleasure, further studies in Art History, or professional careers in curatorship.
