Synopsis

This module is for those with Art background. It introduces clay as a material for fostering art students’ self-expression and meaning making through three-dimensional forms. A range forming techniques will be introduced which will include hand building techniques like pinching, slab work and coiling as well as decorative techniques like glazing. Through practical projects, students will also learn to manage a ceramics art class from start to finish and be exposed to the practises of firing and clay recycling. Object-based thinking will be modelled in this module.

Learning Outcome

Discuss form, texture and function within ceramic literature.
Examine the processes required in the traditional and contemporary manufacture of stoneware.
Apply foundational principles and approaches in the manufacture of ceramic works (e.g. hand building techniques, glazing, wheel work etc.).
Prepare the different steps for creating ceramics
Experiment with techniques to create the ceramic that expresses ideas and intent.
