Synopsis

This course explores and examines the physiological, psychological and pedagogical aspects of teaching singing to school-aged children. Students will discover teaching techniques for a variety of vocal music styles and genres, emphasizing systematic study of vocal process, proper skill development and vocal health. Students are strongly advised to revise and strengthen their sight-singing before embarking on this course. They also need to be prepared to come back for the practical assessment which is held outside of the 6 week sessions.

Learning Outcome

  • Employ the mechanics and fundamentals of singing, including posture, breath management, tone, resonance, vocal registers, tone quality and diction.
  • Discuss the knowledge and skills for teaching singing and maintaining vocal health.
  • Set up a singing performance, including preparing for the selecting and interpreting of songs.
  • Apply appropriate strategies for singing performance and teaching
  • Design age-and skill-appropriate vocal exercises for warm-up and skill development.
  • Assess and correct vocal faults, including individual vocal technique and group singing.
