Aural Musicianship (BMU211)

Synopsis

Developing good aural skills is an important part of any music education and the ability to hearhow music works helps with all aspects of music-making and learning. BMU211 AuralMusicianship seeks to develop the practical (aural and analytical) skills relevant to the needs ofstudents through a combination of practical exercises, score study, andanalysis of examples. Through practice, students would be able to better acquire auraldiscrimination and fluent score-reading, and to gain a fluent and functional understanding ofmusical concepts in music.

Learning Outcome

  • Identify, sing or notate given diatonic intervals and triads.
  • Verify the key or mode of the given musical piece.
  • Demonstrate the ability to follow the rhythmic pulse of the given music.
  • Analyse textual handling of a given melody or harmony through sketches.
  • Discriminate aurally the melodic, rhythmic and harmonic structures through sketches.
  • Apply analytical and theoretical knowledge for questions delivered in an aural music test.
