Synopsis

Music from different traditions (including popular music) are recognised to be an important aspect of music education. This course explores wide-ranging music traditions (including Asian music traditions). The diversity of ideas and music practices will raise awareness of ethnomusicological issues and explore the rich diversity of music perspectives, highlighting the role of music in societies.

Learning Outcome

  • Examine a wide-range of music from different music, practices, traditions, and culture.
  • Identify similarities and differesnces among musical traditions, emphasizing the historical, cultural and philosophical understanding of each.
  • Compare different music genres within a geographic region and respective culture.
  • Interpret various understandings, culture and practice of ‘music’ to foster creative and diverse learning experiences.
  • Appraise current understanding of ethnomusicology and identify misconceptions which arises.
  • Analyse concepts and theories in relation to ethnomusicology
