Students will explore and learn to apply basic instructional skills in physical education settings, including environmental arrangements, task presentations, content development, lesson planning and feedback. Students will apply instructional principles to small peer group settings using open and closed movement skills. Requirements for each teaching episode include the construction of a written lesson plan aligned with developmental appropriateness, an audio or video recording of the teaching and submission of a written self-reflection on teaching. Students will use technological skills to critique and evaluate their instructional methods.

Learning Outcome

  • Demonstrate the difference between closed and open skills and the implications of such for the design of learning experiences
  • Determine and explain providing examples of objectives in different learning domains.
  • Design characteristics of a good task presentation.
  • Demonstrate examples of general, specific, evaluative, corrective, congruent, incongruent, and positive and negative feedback.
  • Describe the implications of groups of learners on the design of learning experiences.
  • Develop appropriate student performance objectives for a learning experience in the three domains.
  • Create a strategy for the presentation and development of a skill consistent with the characteristics of that skill.
  • Explain a task to a learner with clarity, choosing most appropriate modes of communication.
  • Demonstrate and/or explain skills accurately and efficiently using qualities of a good demonstration.
  • Design a sequence of lessons using extension, refinement and application tasks.
