Culture and Diversity introduces students to an anthropological perspective on human societies. The concept of ‘culture’ will be critically examined in a broad range of everyday settings and social institutions. This includes the intersection of cultural diversity with religion, kinship, gender, migration, economics, politics and systems of social stratification. At the same time, major anthropological theories and the historical foundations of cultural diversity will be explored to enable students to develop an informed appreciation and critical understanding of cultural variation and its consequences in an increasingly globalised world. The use of ethnographic case studies will also be a significant aspect of this course as students are expected to apply and situate their learning in a practical manner.
