Synopsis

This course is designed to provide analytical processes, tools and skills that will assist in making your work experience as an interpreter as rewarding and effective as possible. The course will also introduce you to criteria-based reflection on your professional practice, and strategies for self-learning, to enable you to become life-long learners.

Learning Outcome

  • Demonstrate a good knowledge of the professional role-based and philosophical underpinnings of ethics in professional practice
  • Examine and apply the ethical frameworks of professional interpreting practice, whether they deal with the concepts of ideology, position and positionality
  • Illustrate potential conflict situations, including situations of conflict of interest, and their causes, and apply appropriate role-based resolution strategies; discuss professional and industrial issues in the translating and interpreting industry
  • Construct the professional and business frameworks in whose contexts professional translators and interpreters are required to operate
  • Propose a set of cultural, societal, professional and institutional contexts relevant to carrying out interpreting by showing an understanding of the concepts of ideology, position and positionality in relation to their language pair
  • Analyse real-life professional translating and interpreting practice, and categorise abilities to make appropriate transfer, ethical and other relevant professional decisions through reflective learning
  • Show competence in writing an academic paper on interpretation practice
