This course provides an overview, from both national and international viewpoints, of the issues and perspectives related to the transition from preschool to primary school. It discusses issues concerning socio-emotional well-being and cognitive development of young children before, at the point of transfer, and after the transfer from early childhood settings to primary schools. It also explores the perspectives of children, parents and both preschools and primary school practitioners. It outlines some examples of successful transition initiatives which have enhanced the transition for children and their families and identifies effective ways of assisting children and parents in the transition process.
