Synopsis

Understanding the fundamentals of linguistic analysis begins with an exploration of the nature of language and the academic ways of thinking about issues relating to language structure and use. Students will learn about the basic units and systems of language – from sound to word to meaning to grammatical systems. As this course does not presuppose any prior knowledge of linguistics, it will allow students to explore the intricacies of language systems and at the same time giving students enough background to cover the topics in more advanced courses.
