Synopsis

This course covers historical, social and cultural insights of well-known compositions in music. Participants will consider the works of significant composers, including Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Bach, Beethoven, Berlioz, Mahler, Stravinsky and Bartok as well as specific national and regional styles. The survey is broadly chronological, with each week devoted to one major style period in the development of music. Through case studies, participants will learn about basic elements of music, and the ways these integrate to create masterpieces of various styles. Fundamental principles of historiography, genre, periodisation, canon and reception, among other issues, will be discussed. In addition, participants will learn to evaluate and analyse their musical experience through recorded and 'live' performances of music.
