Synopsis

This course enables students to explore and experiment with oil painting techniques through a series of lectures, demonstrations and studio practices. Students will learn to value contrast of light and shade through the technique of indirect painting (from dark tone to light one); to understand colour theory such as value, intensity, hue and the temperature of colours. Students also learn to observe and transcript texture and pattern to achieve different paint surface. Class critiques and discussions are conducted at the end of the course to help clarify, develop and expand on the skill and knowledge acquired.

Learning Outcome

  • Recognize and produce a range of interesting colors through the mixing of primaries, complementaries; made lighter and more opaque with the addition of white; and mix darks with brown and blue
  • Define and be aware of basic visual concept, aesthetic value and handling of oil medium in Western Painting
  • Develop observational skills, awareness and control over texture and tonality such as the light, mid and dark-tone
  • Illustrate the composition carefully and work by using bold brushstroke to describe the preliminary shapes before building up subsequent layers of thicker paint
  • Identify characteristics of art production and the working of the art industry
  • Relate to the demands of the artistic profession
