Synopsis

HCM551 Human Capital Management in the New Normal offers a contemporary exploration of how organizations manage, engage, and develop their most valuable asset—people. This course examines the evolution of human capital, which encompasses the knowledge, skills, education, and expertise of the workforce. The course provides a framework for understanding the Future of Work by investigating the historical context of the Industrial Revolution and its transformation into today’s labour market, including the ongoing shifts in the post-COVID-19 era and the impact of demographic changes and workforce diversity. Additionally, it addresses specific human capital design challenges in creating effective strategies in a rapidly evolving environment. The focus is on employee well-being, mental wellness, and the integration of workplace culture and learning. The course also explores the potentials and challenges of digitalization, from automation to the evolving role of technology. Students will gain insights into emerging trends in skills-based hiring, training, and workforce development, particularly in response to the changing nature of work post-pandemic. Given the significant growth of the nonprofit sector post-pandemic, the course delves into the unique human capital challenges and opportunities within this sector. The course also examines the concept of tripartism and its relevance in modern labour relations, while evaluating new models of hiring and collaboration in the post-COVID landscape. By the end of the course, students will have gained valuable insights into how organisations can effectively manage human capital in an increasingly dynamic world, with an emphasis on innovation well-being and the future of work.
