Information Management for Supply Chains (LOG301)


Information is crucial to supply chain performance because it provides the basis on which supply chain processes execute transactions and managers make decisions. Many technologies exist to capture and analyse information in the supply chain. Management must decide which technologies to use and how to integrate these technologies into their companies and their partners. This course provides students with an understanding of the role of information and information technology (IT) in a supply chain. Students will gain insights into the concepts and techniques of Internet- and technology-enabled supply chain management so that organisations can leverage on these tools to maintain their competitive advantage.

E-Learning: BLENDED - Learning is done MAINLY online using interactive study materials in Canvas. Students receive guidance and support from online instructors via discussion forums and emails. This is supplemented with SOME face-to-face sessions. If the course has an exam component, This will be administered on-campus.

  • Show the importance of information systems to support supply chain management.
  • Examine the importance of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in supply chain management.
  • Appraise the IT applications in customer and supplier relationship management.
  • Formulate solutions to increase supply chain visibility using technologies such as barcodes and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).
  • Propose feasible supply chain solutions using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS).
  • Discuss the use of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and emerging technologies in supply chain management.
  • Relate the techniques and technologies for managing supply chain information to the work environment.
  • Develop the essential knowledge and interpersonal skills to work effectively in a team.
