Synopsis

This course compares Bahasa Indonesia (BI) and Bahasa Melayu (BM) in terms of vocabulary, grammar and discourse structure, both spoken and written. The aim is that students should understand the differences between the two forms of language and have some knowledge about the historical and contemporary facts that have motivated changes – both those to make the two forms different from each other and ones that may tend to make them more alike. Upon successful completion of the course you are expected to be able to: 1. Recognise and explain features of Bahasa Indonesia that differ from Malay. 2. Explain something about the historical and contemporary events and phenomena that have resulted in both greater differences and, perhaps more recently, greater similarities between the two language forms.
