Chinese Green Transition Strategies in Hebei (OEL315)


The objective of OEL315 is to provide students with the environments and tools to cultivate a deep understanding of green transition strategies employed by the Chinese government. This objective is achieved through a combination of experiential learning, e-learning, classroom activities, and participation in an overseas trip to Hebei, China.Premier Li Keqiang promised that China will reduce the population of the rural poor by over 10 million in 2018, including 2.8 million people to be relocated from inhospitable areas. According to the States Council of People Republic of China (2018), ‘China will take stronger-than-expected green measures to lift about 15 million people out of poverty by 2020’. Examples of such green measures include increasing investments in ecological tourism that not only boost employment, but also increase the incomes of impoverished residents. This reflects the unique Chinese approach towards poverty alleviation that is achieved together with environmental protection and commercial objectives. This trip will explore how entrepreneurial, political, environmental and cultural factors feature in the Chinese green economy. Throughout this trip, students will have opportunities to interact with Development Research Council Green Team of the States, local government officials, local residents, corporations and potential investors. Through these experiential learning means, students would hopefully be able to relate the object of the course – green transition strategies – to the theme of poverty and commerce.

  • Examine how the locals address poverty while balancing environmental and economic needs
  • Construct new approaches towards alleviating poverty that also addresses other Chinese concerns
  • Verify these new approaches with stakeholders
