Aviation Safety Program Management (SFTY345)

Synopsis

The principles of the development and management of an effective aviation safety program will be studied in this course. The philosophy and historical development of major concepts are examined with particular emphasis on areas of special concern in organizational accident prevention. Students analyze the influence of morale, education and training, the role of the supervisor, and other substantial program elements of value to the aviation safety manager.

E-Learning: BLENDED - Learning is done MAINLY online using interactive study materials in Canvas. Students receive guidance and support from online instructors via discussion forums and emails. This is supplemented with SOME face-to-face sessions. If the course has an exam component, This will be administered on-campus.

Learning Outcome

Apply system safety definitions, principles, and concepts as discussed to a system safety program.
Apply the basic concept of risk management to aviation safety.
Justify the need for an aviation safety program and the issues, which must be addressed when building an aviation safety program.
Recognize the factors, which influence “risk taking” by people and management controls over “risk taking.”
Explain how the program elements are incorporated into an aviation safety program: Internal reporting and information distribution systems; Safety committees; Inspection programs; Education and training; Awards programs; Preparation for an investigation of accidents.
Explain the special requirements for an airport/ heliport safety program and compare these requirements to a typical aviation safety program.
Compare and contrast the special requirements for an airport maintenance safety program to a typical aviation safety program.
Discuss analytical techniques for hazard/ risk evaluation and control
Develop and defend, in writing, an aviation safety program.
Compare and contrast the current flight safety programs being used in the industry today.
