With more than 200 million people now living outside of their home countries, international migration is proving to be a growing issue of global concern. We take a cross-national approach to studying the flow of international migration, an issue that has grown in political salience in recent years. We begin by looking at the historical flow of people across continents, and the factors driving this movement of people. We then introduce some of the major theories underpinning the study of international migration. Finally, with the help of country studies, we take a closer look at the stresses that immigrants place on society, and the various policies implemented by governments around the world as each tackles the issue of incorporating these new residents into their respective societies.
