Programme Evaluation (SWK290)


This course serves to provide Social Work students with an introduction to the core concepts relating to the evaluation of social service programmes and interventions. Through this ourse, students will learn the planning and execution of evaluating a project as well as the dissemination of evaluation results through an evaluation report. Specifically, students will learn about the purpose of programme evaluation, ethical principles governing evaluation research, and the types of research designs adopted in an evaluation research to assess the effectiveness of a programme or intervention.

E-Learning: BLENDED - Learning is done MAINLY online using interactive study materials in Canvas. Students receive guidance and support from online instructors via discussion forums and emails. This is supplemented with SOME face-to-face sessions. If the course has an exam component, this will be administered on-campus.

Learning Outcome

  • Explain common terms, concepts, and theories in programme evaluation.
  • Discuss the importance of programme evaluation for evidence-based practice.
  • Illustrate the main contents of a measurement tool, proposal or report in a programme evaluation.
  • Differentiate between formative and summative evaluations.
  • Apply appropriate research designs and/or evaluation measures for a programme evaluation project.
  • Examine the ethical and practical challenges in programme evaluation.
