Rehabilitation and Criminal Justice Systems (SWK384)

Synopsis

This course provides students with a basic knowledge of theories of deviance that are applied in social work policy and practice. It will begin by discussing concepts of deviance, crime, justice and systems of rehabilitation or punishment. Various theories of deviance will be discussed and the intervention options towards crime are examined. Contemporary or emerging issues on crime and deviance will be explored and intervention strategies will be examined. In particular, the course looks at the rehabilitation and criminal justice systems in Singapore, how these systems intersect with social work and client systems. Various community and institutional rehabilitation options are discussed, together with how incarceration impacts on families and children. Intergenerational factors of crime will also be examined.
