Modern Tamil Poetry (TLL105)

Synopsis

The forces which make for literary output during this period are many. The vast developmentof printing; the struggle for independence; extensive development of literacy – all thesefactors have shaped the writing in Tamil Nadu, as in the rest of India. The three importantaspects of modern poetry were: (1) spirit of opposition to imperialism (2) spirit of nationalism(3) social freedom. This course covers the growth of poetry in the 20th and 21st centuries, fromthe conventional to the modern, such as Haiku, Centriu and Kuku. “Puthukkavithai” or a newof poetry is another branch in the literary tradition which can be easily understood by anyonewith a basic language education. The course also covers contemporary poems such asfeminist poems and Dahlit’s poems.
