Event Highlights

On Tuesday, 1 Sep 2020, 65 students tuned into Zoom platform to attend a Financial Awareness talk conducted by the Institute for Financial Literacy (IFL). The speaker, Ms Dora Ho, kept the audience captivated with pointers on Introduction to Personal Investing. The talk was targeted at students who were new at investing.

During the informative session, Ms Ho touched on 4 important aspects:

  • Determine your investment objectives
  • Understand the risk return trade-off
  • Various investment strategies
  • Construct, monitor and rebalance an investment portfolio

She also shared some pointers about investment horizon, which is essentially the length of time that one has to invest in order to achieve their financial goals. Ms Ho expanded that she would usually advise people to start investing early and that retirement planning should ideally start from the time that one starts their career. She advised the participants to take into account the different typical life stages, i.e. of couples getting married, having children and eventually going into pre-retirement and the retirement phase itself. The speaker also facilitated a fun quiz using Kahoot! to test if students caught the important pointers of Investment 101. Most students gave positive feedback and were happy with the workshop, with one participant even indicating that he was "very satisfied with the trainer and content". After a solid hour of information, the talk ended with a short Q&A session at about 8.30pm.
