Singapore's only local and privately-funded university has committed more than $1.8m to make university education more accessible to outstanding adult achievers since 2006.
2008 1st Semester Award ceremony will be held on 19 January.
As part of its social mission to promote continuing education among working professionals and adult learners, SIM University (UniSIM) will be awarding scholarships, sponsorships and study awards worth up to $1 million in 2008.
First launched in January 2006, the awards are offered under UniSIM's Financial Aids Scheme and reflect the university's recognition and focus on academic quality. To date, a total value of $1.8 m has been committed, benefiting 107 UniSIM students.
In the first half of this year, awards will be given out to 33 outstanding students with strong career achievements, academic and co-curriculum records. 10 recipients will be receiving the coveted SIM University Scholarship Awards.
The President of UniSIM, Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, shared, "As Singapore's first and only private university catering to the needs of adult learners, it is part of our social mission to provide wider access to educational opportunities. Our UniSIM Scholarships recognize outstanding achievers and spur them to develop as leaders who can make a difference in the working world."
Professor Cheong added, "Our sponsorship programme and study awards aim to assist and encourage more capable adults to continue on their journey of lifelong learning. As a university for the people, we want to play a part to develop adults who wish to improve themselves through advanced education and yet may find it financially challenging to do so."
The three types of awards available under the UniSIM Financial Aid scheme are:
- Scholarship Awards, which cover 100% of tuition fees, course materials, examinations fees, and other compulsory fees.
- Sponsorship Awards, which cover 50% of tuition fees, and are jointly offered by partner organisations such as NTUC, SAFRA, and the HomeTeamNS, to members and staff of these organisations who wish to continue their education. The Sponsorship Awards will be granted to 15 students this semester.
- Study Awards, which are worth $1,000 each (or $500 each for General Studies Programme), and offered to those who are financially disadvantaged but have strong potential for further professional and personal development. The Study Awards will be granted to eight students this semester.
The awards are given out twice a year, before the start of each academic semester, in January and July. This year's first batch of awards will be presented on 19 January 2008 at a ceremony held in conjunction with UniSIM Orientation 2008.
True to UniSIM's broad and diverse student culture, this year's award recipients hail from all walks of life and professions. Scholars include a top Tamil teacher and a Sri Lankan monk with a prior law degree. (Please refer to Appendix A for the list of success stories).
You are cordially invited to attend the scholarship award presentation on 19 January 2008 at 1.45 PM at SIM Headquarters, Clementi Road, and to meet the recipients. (Meet at Level 2).
