SIM University (UniSIM), Singapore's 4th university for working adults, has launched its first customized degree programme. The Bachelor of Science in Management and Security Studies (BScMSS) degree, the first of its kind in Singapore, showcases UniSIM's unique ability to combine industry knowledge with its academic framework to create new degree programmes tailored to meet the specific knowledge needs of organizations and industries.
The programme is jointly developed with the Singapore Police Force (SPF) to serve as an upgrading pathway for non-graduate police officers and could eventually be offered to other officers in the Ministry of Home Affairs. The degree programme offered through UniSIM's modular and flexible learning pedagogy would make it easy for in-service police officers to upgrade their qualifications, given the unpredictable nature of their duties.
The new BScMSS programme will be open for application in July 2006. Administered by UniSIM's School of Business, students in the programme will acquire knowledge in UniSIM's academic expertise in the areas of organization development, human resource, statistics, corporate communications, sociology and psychology. In addition, UniSIM will also be partnering the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (IDSS), hosted in NTU, to develop new content and course materials in counter terrorism and regional security.
"UniSIM's partnership with SPF exemplifies the type of industry relevant programmes that our university thrives in designing and implementing. Our strength lies in the ability to customize current academic and management knowledge - delivered through our trademark flexible learning methods - for working professionals to apply in the marketplace and in society. This partnership is a seminal development that will spawn similar industry collaborations in the coming months and years," said Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, President of SIM University.
