Partnership with Red Hat aims to meet demand for Open Source professionals who can be Red Hat Certified Architects in Singapore
The SIM University (UniSIM) has partnered Red Hat, the world’s leading provider of Open Source solutions, to offer Singapore’s only Executive Master programme focused on Open Source software.
Classes will commence in January 2009 and those from non-IT background are invited to apply as well.
Pervasiveness of Open Source
Open Source software (OSS) is fast gaining popularity as users can use, distribute, modify and customise them to perform functions offered by the proprietary software at a lower cost. Recent findings by CIO.com indicated that more than half of 328 professionals surveyed worldwide are using OSS and an additional 10% plans to do so in the next year.
With increasing business competitiveness, cost-conscious commercial companies are using OSS as an alternative to proprietary software to lower the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of their software. Even proprietary software giants are opening up some of their software codes for sharing.
The Open Source movement was started in the 1980s by volunteer enthusiasts worldwide who are passionate about providing a "free" and more flexible alternative to proprietary software. The movement gained momentum in the 1990s. As more commercial companies opt for OSS in place of packaged software, there is a rising demand for qualified professionals to design and manage the freeware.
Addressing an industry phenomenon
Companies like Red Hat provide businesses who are users of OSS with design, development and maintenance services at a low cost. Commenting on the collaboration with market leader Red Hat, Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, President of UniSIM, said, "The Open Source phenomenon represents one of the most significant developments in the software industry. There is a shortage and growing need for a pool of skilled manpower in designing and managing Open Source Software. The UniSIM Executive Master programme will prepare participants to undertake technical as well as management roles in the OSS industry or businesses that are users of OSS. Our partnership with Red Hat will ensure that our curriculum is relevant and meets the needs of the industry."
The UniSIM Open Source Software Management Programme will commence in January 2009 and will lead to dual qualifications: the Executive Graduate Diploma and the Executive Master.
Participants will graduate with the globally recognised and much sought after Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) certification and Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA) certification. Graduates with Red Hat certifications will be well placed to work in any OSS environment, not limited to Red Hat or Red Hat’s clients.
Each intake will be limited to 30 students to accommodate the intensive practical and robust nature of the programme. The Executive Master programme is open to all diploma or degree holders and applicants without the Red Hat Certified Technician (RHCT) certification and Open Source background will be required to take bridging courses prior to embarking on the programme. The course fee for the Executive Master programme is $27,000 (excluding bridging courses). For more information please see www.unisim.edu.sg.
Starting from January 2009, students of UniSIM’s existing Information Communication and Technology (ICT) undergraduate programme can also take selected Red Hat Academy courses as part of their degree programme and become Red Hat Certified Engineers (RHCE).
