2012 UniSIM Contemporary China Public Lecture: Chinese Cinema In The 21st Century


The Auditorium at Singapore Press Holdings News Centre was beaming with some 400 audience attending “Chinese Cinema in the 21st Century”, the second series of the UniSIM Contemporary China Public Lecture. The event held on 21 October 2012 was jointly organised by UniSIM Centre for Chinese Studies, Lianhe Zaobao and Business China, and sponsored by the Lee Foundation.

Professor Xie Fei from Beijing Film Academy was known for his distinctive directing style as one of the most influential "fourth generation" directors in China. He gave an overview of the drastic trajectory of the motion picture industry in China over the last 30 over years including how the six different generations of directors have emerged. 

Professor Peggy Chiao from Taipei National University of the Arts was reputed as the prime mover of the Taiwan New Cinema movement in the 1980s. She shared her view of the motion picture industry landscape in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The audience particularly enjoyed the movie trailers interspersed in her presentation.

The event ended with a question-and-answer session chaired by Mr Kenneth Tan, Chair of the Singapore Film Society.
