On 3 February 2016, Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) and Senior Minister of State for Defence Ong Ye Kung, led a delegation from the Ministry of Education (MOE) on a visit to SIM University (UniSIM). Among the members of the delegation were Dr Janil Puthucheary, Minister of State for Education, and Communications and Information; and Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Parliamentary Secretary for Education, and Social and Family Development.
The visitors were warmly received by Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, President of UniSIM; Professor Tsui Kai Chong, Provost of UniSIM; and Associate Professor Wong Yue Kee, Vice President of Learning Services at UniSIM. They also had the chance to meet up and interact with other UniSIM senior management staff.
The visit was timely not only because Minister Ong was appointed to his current position in September 2015, but also because UniSIM had celebrated its 10th anniversary last year. During the visit, Minister Ong and his team were updated on UniSIM's achievements over the past 10 years, and development plans in the next 10. In addition to gaining a better understanding of UniSIM's role in the Singapore education landscape to support lifelong learning, with the offering of part- and full-time degree programmes, and continuous education and training courses, the visitors also learnt how UniSIM students are empowered with a myriad of exciting e-learning options.
The delegation also attended a project presentation session, with a display of posters and models, by UniSIM students, alumni, associates and faculty, before everyone mingled over a dinner reception.
The visit ended with a class observation, which saw the MOE delegation join UniSIM's part-time Bachelor of Social Work programme students in class, to observe how the students learn effectively through role-playing on how to work in small groups.
