Associate Professor Randolph Tan, Deputy Director of the Centre for Applied Research at SIM University (UniSIM), is among the nine new Nominated Members of Parliament (NMPs) who have been selected by the Special Select Committee of Parliament to add to the depth and breadth of the debates in the Singapore Parliament. The NMPs were picked from a slate of 36 candidates.Assoc Prof Tan has conducted research as well as taught in the areas of statistics, econometrics and applied economics. His empirical work includes labour and housing matters.
Singapore President and UniSIM Patron Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam will be presenting the Instruments of Appointments to the NMPs at the Istana on 26 August 2014. The NMPs' two-and-a-half year term will commence on the same day, and they will take their oath at the next sitting of Parliament on 8 September 2014. Introduced in 1990, the NMP scheme seeks to bring a wider representation of independent and non-partisan views into the Parliament. The nominees are selected from a list of candidates proposed by the general public at the Special Select Committee's invitation. The candidates comprise those who have distinguished themselves through their contributions to society or in their respective fields.
