'Bridging Two Worlds: Bilingualism And Translation In Singapore' Public Forum

On 28 April 2012, close to 300 participants attended the 'Bridging Two Worlds: Bilingualism and Translation in Singapore' Public Forum held at SIM University (UniSIM). The event was graced by Guest of Honour, Ms Sim Ann, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Law and Ministry of Education.
 
Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, President of UniSIM, kicked off the event with a welcome speech, followed by Ms Sim who delivered the keynote address. In her speech, Ms Sim stressed the importance of having good translators and interpreters, and shared on how the translation and interpretation scene in Singapore has improved over the past few years. She pointed out that the number of translation and interpretation courses in Singapore has increased in recent years and cited UniSIM's Translation and Interpretation programme, which was started in 2007, as one of the examples. Ms Sim also highlighted UniSIM’s Certification Examination for Professional Interpreters when she spoke of the progress Singapore has made in terms of industry certification.
 
Professor Eddie Kuo, Academic Advisor of UniSIM and Director of the UniSIM Centre for Chinese Studies then introduced the forum panellists – Mr Tan Dan Feng, Executive Director of Interlexis Pte Ltd; Mr Ung Gim Sei, Partner of RHTLaw Taylor Wessing; Mr Peter Ong, Assistant Editor of Lianhe Zaobao; and Ms Susan Xu, Head of Translation and Interpretation programme at UniSIM's School of Arts and Social Sciences. All of them shared a short presentation each before jointly taking questions from the floor.
 
The half day event was co-organised by the UniSIM Centre for Chinese Studies, the School of Arts and Social Sciences, and Lianhe Zaobao.
