On 29 – 30 August 2017, the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) hosted and co-organised the 30th Anniversary Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFESS) Symposium to commemorate the 30 years since its establishment. HFESS – a federated society of the International Ergonomics Association – invited 14 renowned international and local speakers to share the wide range of human factors topics including space exploration, sustainability, artificial intelligence and the future of work. Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, President of SUSS, welcomed the speakers and participants, and highlighted that SUSS is pleased to be able to play a role in educating and training future generations of human factors and safety professionals in Singapore through our degree programme in Human Factors in Safety.
Human-centred design is so critical, especially as we move towards an era of disruptive and smart technology, as well as an ageing society. Professor Cheong praised the hard work and courage of Singapore’s human factors pioneers who had laboured to promote and uphold this very niche science and discipline in the country. The 30th Anniversary HFESS Symposium was organised as a satellite event to the World Safety and Health Congress to be held at Marina Bay Sands from 3 – 6 September 2017.
