Chinese Cinema Talkies

H2012_20Oct_P_p1

Some 200 movie buffs were treated to two Chinese movies on 20 October 2012 at Cathay Cineplex Cineleisure Orchard, the first-ever "Chinese Cinema Talkies" co-organised by UniSIM Centre for Chinese Studies and Singapore Film Society.

The Women from the Lake of Scented Souls won Golden Bear award in Berlin in 1993. It told the story of the repressed relationship of the sesame mill owner with her husband, son, lover and daughter-in-law. Xie Fei, the movie director from Beijing had an engaging dialogue session with the audience after the movie screening.

In the afternoon, Datong: The Great Society had its premier screening in Singapore followed by a dialogue session with the producer, Peggy Chiao from Taipei.  Datong is the Chinese notion of "utopia". It was a refreshing docu-drama recounting the lesser known history of Kang You-wei (1858-1927). New York-based Hong Kong director, Evans Chan was recognized for his artistic originality in this film, mixing documentary with theatrical presentation.
