On 4 August 2012, SIM University’s (UniSIM) School of Human Development and Social Services organised a public forum which brought together veteran practitioners from the field of counselling to share their insights on contemporary practices in professional counselling. Guest speakers included Mr Tan Boon Huat, Director of MESERVE; Dr Cecilia Soong, Senior Guidance Specialist at the Ministry of Education; Ms Lim Hui Khim, Senior Mental Health Counsellor at the Changi General Hospital; and Mr David Blakely, a counsellor registered with the Singapore Association for Counselling. The forum attracted close to 40 participants who were keen to gain a better understanding of counselling education and practice. The speakers’ heartfelt sharing brought about public awareness on counselling as a helping profession in the school, family and mental health settings. These insights were valuable to participants who were looking to make a career switch and join the profession on a full-time basis.
