On 27 November 2012, SIM University (UniSIM) launched its first endowment fund – the Social Resilience Enhancement Fund (SREF) – at a ceremony graced by Mr Chan Chun Sing, Acting Minister for Social and Family Development.
The S$1 million fund, seeded by a grant of S$500,000 from the Harvard Singapore Foundation (HSF) with an equal matching amount by UniSIM, was set up to support and advance knowledge, skills and leadership in the “helping” professions – areas fast emerging as primary concerns of society. The SREF will provide study sponsorships for select students from UniSIM’s School of Human Development and Social Services pursuing programmes in Community Leadership and Social Development, Counselling, Gerontology and Social Work, as well as bring in scholars and experts in these fields for the benefit of the professions.
The ceremony also saw Minister Chan present SREF study sponsorships to the three inaugural recipients, viz., Dr Ler Ser Yeng from the Master of Community Leadership and Social Development programme, Ms Andrina Tan Yik Ching from the Master of Counselling programme and Ms Lynnett Ng Ee Lui from the Master of Social Work programme.
