Professor Cham Tao Soon, founding chancellor (2005 – 2014) of SIM University and current Special Advisor to the SIM Governing Council, has been conferred the 2015 Engineer of the Year Award by the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP).

The award honours individuals who have made substantial contributions to the advancement of the engineering profession in the region, or who have made significant progress in the field of engineering research.

An engineer by training with a PhD in fluid mechanics, Professor Cham was the founding president of the Nanyang Technological Institute (NTI) in 1981 before it was reconstituted as Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in 1991. He was conferred the title of President Emeritus of NTU in 2007.

Early in his 22-year-long watch as president of NTI and NTU, the University was singled out as one of the world's best engineering institutions by the Commonwealth Engineering Council.

Professor Cham was nominated for the 2015 Engineer of the Year Award by the Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES), of which he is an honorary fellow and a past president. The IES is a member of the FEIAP – an international, non-profit professional organisation that encourages economic and social advancement through technical progress, and also engineering as a profession.
