On 15 Oct 2015, School of Business organised the SG50-UniSIM Business Excellence Symposium on campus as part of UniSIM’s celebration of SG50. Since Singapore’s independence, economic development has been a central focus in our nation-building. While astute economic planning and good governance have oft been cited as reasons for our economic achievement, the contribution of local private businesses has received less attention. The Symposium thus featured three local businesses that are familiar household names to many Singaporeans and have been established for more than 50 years. The senior executives from these three businesses who spoke at the Symposium are Mr Richard Eu (Group CEO of Eu Yan Sang International Ltd), Mrs Fong Loo Fern (MD, CYC The Custom Shop) and Mr Adrin Loi (Executive Chairman,Ya Kun International Pte Ltd). The Guest-of-Honour (GOH) was Ms Low Yen Ling, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Trade and Industry, and Mayor, South West CDC.The three Guest Speakers openly shared the history and the ups and downs of their family businesses. They also spoke on how they have overcame much challenges to remain successful over the years. There was also a lively exchange of views and insights during the panel discussion where participants had the chance to pose their questions to and learn from the speakers and the GOH.The event was attended by almost 300 participants, with a good majority being senior executives, directors, managers and entrepreneurs from the industry. The event was co-sponsored by the SG50 Programme Office under the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. OCBC Bank and Ya Kun International also sponsored gifts for the Symposium goodie bags.
