Udon Know Tokyo Logistics? We Do And So Matcha More...

Ten students from SBIZ’s Business and Logistics and Supply Chain Management programmes, accompanied by Associate Professor Tan Yan Weng and Dr Hsieh Cheng-Hsien, Head and Senior Lecturer of our Logistics and Supply Chain Management programme respectively, participated in the 8th International Logistics Case Competition held in Tokyo from June 24 to July 1.

Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) has been taking part in this annual event since 2013. Organised by the Hong Kong Logistics Association, this year saw the largest turnout with 40 undergraduate students hailing from Japan’s Nihon University and Keio University; Hong Kong’s University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Community College of City University; Beijing’s Jiatong University; South Korea’s Korea Aeronautical University; and SUSS.

The participants visited three companies as part of their case subjects for the competition – Kamigumi Co. Ltd., a third-party logistics company that handles general cargo; Konoike Transport Co. Ltd., a logistics operator that provides a one-stop distribution service for fashion and apparel products with its warehouse geared for e-commerce; and Korchina Logistics Japan that handles high-value electronic equipment to be air freighted to various locations in Asia. Divided into multi-national teams of four members, they interacted with senior management and operatives to identify the logistics problems and issues faced, and worked as a team to present their findings to a panel of judges within two days. It was not all work for the participants though; they also soaked in the sights and sound and ate fresh seafood in this fascinating city during their free time.
