On 29 July 2015, 11 SIM University (UniSIM) undergraduates, who had demonstrated outstanding academic and co-curricular achievements, strong language skills and leadership qualities, as well as a zest for community service, were presented with bond-free scholarships.
These students were chosen from a pool of 550 applicants. These scholarships affirm UniSIM's commitment in nurturing students holistically by providing the recognition and support to develop their personal and professional competencies.
Among the recipients was UniSIM student Mr Mohamad Hafez bin Sidek, who represents the aspirational ethos of UniSIM in offering pathways for lifelong learning and skills upgrading. He took almost 10 years to complete his Institute of Technical Education studies and attain his polytechnic diploma – both pursued on a part-time basis, while holding a full-time job – before embarking on his finance degree at UniSIM.
Hafez, an executive at the Central Provident Fund Board, shared that he believes in the concept of CANI (Constant And Never-ending Improvement), developed by Anthony Robbins, author of "Awaken the Giant Within". He draws inspiration from this book to continuously upgrade his knowledge and skills so as to be able to make valuable contributions to society. Hafez added: "I am grateful to have been presented with the UniSIM scholarship as it reduces my financial burden, allowing me to focus on my work and studies. I am motivated to perform better both at work and in my studies in this new chapter of my life."
UniSIM's sister entity SIM Global Education also presented scholarships at the same ceremony to 16 of their undergraduate students and one graduate who will be pursuing his PhD studies in the United Kingdom. The total value of the 28 scholarships awarded was close to S$400,000.
Mr Victor Liew, Vice-Chairman of the SIM Governing Council, was Guest-of-Honour at the ceremony. Among those present were members of the UniSIM senior management team, viz., Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, President; Professor Tsui Kai Chong, Provost; and Associate Professor Yip Woon Kwong, Registrar.
