On 22 January 2016, Dr Steve Chan, Head of the Master of Community Leadership and Social Development programme at SIM University (UniSIM), was presented a research grant by MSIG Insurance through its Tokyo-based non-profit organisation Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Welfare Foundation (MSIWF).
MSIWF – founded in Japan in 1975 – supports practicable research in the areas of senior citizen welfare and traffic safety that benefits the community. The MSIWF Research Grant has been made available in Singapore since 2007, and this is the first time that UniSIM has submitted an application.
Dr Chan's project, entitled "Housing for Seniors in Singapore: Town Planning and Housing Programme Enhancing Supporting Networks of Ethnic Minority Ageing-in-place", emphasises the integral principle of "ageing-in-place" when considering housing for seniors. This principle highlights the need for an environment that promotes caring within the community, with the family being the core care-giving unit. Through this project, Dr Chan also aims to fill the research gap on ageing issues of ethnic minorities and migrants, especially in Asia.
This year, four Singapore-based research projects received grants totaling S$35,600 from MSIWF. Mr Yohichi Kumagai, Executive Director of MSIWF, presented the awards to Dr Chan and his fellow awardees – Dr Wong Ting Hway, a consultant at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH); Ms Fazila Abu Bakar Aloweni, a SGH nurse clinician; and Dr Eldin Lim Wee Chuan, a senior lecturer from the National University of Singapore – at a ceremony held at the Grand Park City Hall. All four projects have demonstrated originality, great social significance and strong practical applications. Findings of the research projects will be published in scientific journals and shared with the foundation by January 2017.
