UniSIM Recognises Spirit Of Contribution And Service

On 21 September 2015, SIM University (UniSIM) held its inaugural UniSIM Spirit Award presentation ceremony to honour and celebrate a group of people-oriented and social-centric full-time programme students, who possess the strength of character, are driven to help others, and who take the lead to better society – the very heart of UniSIM's educational philosophy of "The Three H's" – "Head", "Heart" and "Habit".

Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, President of UniSIM, kicked off the ceremony with an opening address, during which he reaffirmed the University's promotion of an all-round education that develops not only the mind, but also the heart and spirit; an education that is not just about academic achievements, but also about leadership, character, and service to the community. Identifying the award recipients as the catalysts and change-makers for their generation, he hoped for them to inspire and influence others, beyond their classmates and friends, to make a sustained impact and positive difference in the community. He ended his speech with the quote “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all” by Greek philosopher Aristotle to remind all of the importance of a real and complete education. Two videos were also screened during the event – the first detailed what the UniSIM Spirit Award is all about, while the second showed what UniSIM faculty and students had to say about the award winners.

The inaugural batch of recipients comprised Foo Fang Boon, Davin Ho, Jasmin Kaur d/o Jagjit Singh, Kenneth Lim, Priscilla Ngeow, Teo Hong Jie and Joseph Yap. They were each presented with S$2,500 (to be offset against their undergraduate tuition fees), a certificate, as well as a copper plate plaque that was specially designed and handcrafted by Mr Ling Teck Mong, a paraplegic who works at Bizlink Centre, a non-profit organisation which helps the disadvantaged be independent through training and employment.

We congratulate the seven winners and look forward to them making the world a better place!
