UniSIM Service-Learning Group Receives Friends Of Students Care Service Award

Six SIM University (UniSIM) full-time students have been presented with the Friends of Students Care Service Award by Students Care Service (SCS) at the organisation's 40th anniversary carnival and volunteers' celebration on 4 June 2016. This award celebrates the students' sustained commitment to collaborate with SCS through student mentoring and engagement programmes, events and activities, conducted as part of their service-learning project. The UniSIM group was nominated by both the students they serve and community partner mentor at SCS.

The UniSIM team comprised first-year students Mr Mervin Sim (Marketing programme), Mr Jeffrey Yong (Accountancy programme), Ms Anusha d/o Lakshmanan (Human Resource Management programme), Ms Siti Afiqah binte Ab Latip (Accountancy programme), Ms Ang Yi Xin (Accountancy programme) and Ms Melissa Ho (Marketing programme).

The group has been collaborating with SCS (Yishun) since November 2015. Calling the experience "a journey of deep learning for both the students of the centre and the volunteers", Service-Learning Leader, Mervin, shared: "It was challenging in the beginning as the students were unfamiliar with us, and we were not sure if we could add value to their learning experience. By working as a team and liaising with our mentor and senior volunteers, we were able to demonstrate our commitment to building trusting relationships with the students.

"SCS strongly believes in engaging, enriching and empowering students. During the school term, our team focused on subjects that the students found challenging, and helped them achieve their personal best through interactive methods that made the sessions more interesting and engaging, thus enabling the students to better absorb the content. School holidays at the centre are fun-filled times with activities aimed at helping students build up their confidence, and foster personal development and growth."

The group intends to continue their collaboration with SCS over the next few years. Their immediate plans are to motivate the SCS students as the national examinations approach by giving advice and sharing experiences, and inviting lecturers and senior students from various institutions to share with the students their options of the various courses available. In the coming academic year, the group will also be conducting a volunteer recruitment drive and training new volunteers.
