Overview

Singapore University of Social Sciences is the only local university that offers an undergraduate programme in Tamil language and literature. This degree programme caters to the needs of adults who aspire to enhance their competence and knowledge levels in Tamil language and literature. It is jointly developed by Singapore University of Social Sciences and scholars from Tamil Nadu. The programme is similar to that being offered in Tamil Nadu. At the same time, local content has been specially integrated into the curriculum to make it more relevant and palatable for students in Singapore. Furthermore, courses on linguistics and translation have been incorporated to suit our local needs of our bilingual society.

The language courses enhance students' understanding of linguistic concepts and language discourse from a functional grammar perspective. The literature courses offer an insight into a range of literary genres, periods and styles.

This programme admits students only for its July intake.

Students may pursue Tamil Language and Literature as a single major or in combination with a Minor.

In addition to the standard admission criteria for all Singapore University of Social Sciences undergraduate programmes, applicants need to fulfil the following:

  • A pass in Tamil at GCE 'A', 'AO' or 'O' level

Dhinakaran – SUSS Bursary in Tamil Studies
The Dhinakaran Education Fund together with SUSS, is supporting 4 study grants at S$1,250 each semester to deserving undergraduates with financial needs from the BA Tamil Language and Literature, and BA Tamil Language with Minor programmes. The grants are open to students with good academic records (new students), or have made satisfactory progress towards complete of his/her academic programme (for existing students).

To graduate with a basic degree, students are required to complete 130 credit units (cu), which include:

This programme is meant for anyone irrespective of their career background but has passion for the language. Particularly, for those who have no degree but work in Tamil related area such as Tamil language teachers, court interpreters, and broadcasters could upgrade their academic qualifications.

Degree holders will be able to engage in Tamil language teaching in pre-primary, primary, secondary, and junior colleges. They can also advance their careers in broadcasting or in the courts and Parliament as interpreters.
