Overview

Combining bilingual tertiary education with professional training, this programme enables students to achieve a mastery of Chinese and English with an in-depth understanding of cultural differences. It offers students an opportunity to develop professional skills in translation and interpretation. The wide range of specialised courses allows students to concentrate on areas they are interested in, such as business, communication and technology, conference interpreting and literature. Placing a special emphasis on the role of technology in various aspects of translation and interpretation, the programme has state-of-the-art interpretation laboratories and uses the latest translation software to keep students abreast of advanced translation technology. Its interdisciplinary nature gives graduates a wide range of career options in many different fields.

Students may pursue Translation and Interpretation as a single major or in combination with a Minor.

Admission Requirements

Refer to general admission criteria for undergraduate programmes.

In addition to the standard admission criteria for all Singapore University of Social Sciences undergraduate programmes, applicants need to meet the following requirements:

  • A pass in GCE ‘A’ Level H2 Translation, or
  • A pass in GCE 'A' Level Higher Chinese or Chinese Language, or
  • A pass in H2 Level Chinese Language, or
  • At least a Grade D in H1 Level Chinese Language, or
  • At least a Grade B4 in GCE 'AO' Level Chinese Language, or
  • At least a Grade B4 in GCE 'O' Level Higher Chinese, or
  • At least a Grade A2 in GCE 'O' Level Chinese (including CL2, and/or CL), or
  • A pass in Higher Level Chinese or at least a Grade 4 in Standard Level Chinese (for IB Diploma holders)

Note: Applicants who do not meet the above Chinese Language Proficiency requirement may be invited to take a Chinese Language Admission Test (CLAT) administered by the Translation and Interpretation programme at SUSS. They may also opt to take the CATTI International or HSK Level 6 test.

Programme Structure

BA Translation and Interpretation
To graduate with a basic degree, students are required to complete 130 credit units (cu), which include:

This degree programme is suitable for those who wish to strengthen their bilingual competence in Chinese and English and develop intercultural intelligence through professional training in translation and interpretation.

The multilingual and interdisciplinary nature of the programme allows graduates to have greater career options in professions that demand good bilingual skills and cross-cultural sensitivity. Our graduates have found promising careers in government agencies, media, public relations and event companies, language service providers, consulting or law firms, banking and insurance companies, education and training institutions. A group of our graduates provide freelance translation and interpretation services.
