This programme integrates essential pedagogical knowledge and skills tailored to practicing teachers as well as those interested in art education. Courses in this programme are designed to provide greater coverage of the various aspects of art education - art pedagogies, art studio practice, curriculum and assessment and art theory.

Developed in consultation with the Singapore Teachers' Academy for the aRts (STAR) and experts in Art Education, the programme has been benchmarked to programmes in the top universities offering art education. The programme is attractive, providing sufficient content in the Minor that will equip the graduate with the versatility to work in a wide field. The electives included in the programme will enhance the expertise of the art educator.

With a practitioner focus on the teaching of art, this programme offers existing and aspiring art practitioners and professionals the specialised knowledge and skills in the areas of key Art Education competencies.

Admission Requirements

General Admission Criteria:

Additional Degree Specific Requirements (Any one of the art-related qualifications listed):

  • A pass at GCE 'A' Level in Art [For GCE A Levels holders (Exams taken up to Year 2006)]
  • A pass in H2 Level in Art [For GCE A Levels holders (Exams taken from Year 2007)]
  • A pass at Higher Level in Art [For International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma]
  • NUS High School Diploma (Specialisation in Art)
  • Art-related diploma (by reputable colleges or polytechnics*)
  • Relevant work experience / other demonstrated competency in Art may be considered (e.g. portfolio)
* These include: LASALLE or NAFA art-related diplomas, NIE Diploma in Art Education (held in-conjunction with a NAFA Diploma in Art Teaching), NIE Diploma in Ed (Secondary) (Art), NIE Diploma in Ed (Primary) (Art), NAFA Diploma in Art Teaching, NIE Advanced Diploma in Primary Art Education, or any art-related diploma from overseas.

Programme Structure

Students are required to complete a total of 130 credit units ( cu) to graduate with a basic degree, inclusive of 10 cu of SUSS core courses.

The breakdown of the cu to be completed is:

  • 70 cu of Major core courses;
  • 40 cu of Minor courses;
  • 10 cu of S R Nathan School of Human Development core courses; and
  • 10 cu of SUSS core courses.

People with passion to make an impact on the art scene in Singapore. The Bachelor of Art Education programme integrates both essential theory and the practice of pedagogy, and is developed with the practitioner in mind as well as those who aspire to be in the field of education, such as those who possess a diploma in Art without a pedagogy focus. The programme builds on the foundational knowledge and skills of current practitioners and offers them the opportunity to explore in greater depth their areas of focus.

Graduates will have the flexibility and proficiency to take up roles in a variety of fields such as:

For the Art graduate:
e.g. media, museums, education, the creative business, and academia. They can progress to a variety of careers, including:practicing artist, art historian, arts administrator, gallery curator, arts journalist, teacher, lecturer, writer, conservationist and designer.
